Angry t50 detents to selector shaft help!

I got a T50 off a friend of a friend and he pulled apart a lot of it, but supposedly it was just supposed to be torqued down... *buzzer* wrong. I can't get the selector shaft to mate to the detents off the main casing. anyone have experience with this part? I know there has got to be some easy way to do this... Oh, and the FSM, Haynes, Chiltons, everything just kinda casually disregards this part of reassembly. already looked.

I'll post pictures soon. We need this tranny to get my friends corolla running asafp and have nooo more money. i'll post pics soon if it will help
